Board game reviews, strategy tips & session reports
Wingspan, the immensely popular, award-winning board game has gone digital. See how this adaptation holds up to its physical counterpart.
The digital version of Wingspan plays exactly like the physical version. If you have not played this board game, you can read my overview of the gameplay and review here.
The digital adaptation lets you play against friends online or via pass-n-play or versus computer opponents. When you play online you have two options, real-time or asynchronous play. The AI can be set to easy or normal difficulty. Your games against the AI can be stopped and picked back up later.
There is a place to view all the birds you have ever placed and you can even examine older games to see how well you have done. You can even view the board state for all players.
The overview above is super short. And that is because Wingspan digital plays so much like the analog version. It is well done, easy to understand for new players, and the interface is excellent.
Like the physical edition the digital version is beautiful. The birds look great and when you first play a bird you get a fun fact about it. And I like that you can look back at old games and see how you’ve done.
My only issue with this near flawless adaptation is the difficulty of the AI. Now don’t get me wrong I am a fine Wingspan player, but I have yet to lose against the normal difficulty. Maybe there are plans to release a hard difficulty which would be nice. I also hope there are plans to include the European Expansion.
The bottom line is if you are a Wingspan fan, get this.
I have never played this game but I definitely want to look into it!
