Deadpool & Friends is the first VS 2PCG Issue expansion. This set is not a stand-alone game, but comes with 55 cards themed around Deadpool, his friends, and enemies.
Deadpool & Friends requires an earlier base set or expansion to play. You can use this expansion to quickly create a playable Deadpool-themed deck. Last fall Upperdeck announced a new release format. This new small expansion is called an Issue of which Deadpool & Friends is the first. Issues are released monthly and contain 55 cards. If you have not played the Marvel VS 2PCG read my review and overview here.
The first thing you will notice is this new version of Deadpool is not an X-men. He belongs to the Underworld faction. This represents his character during his first appearances. As a Main Character Deadpool can reach level 4. It is at this point that he breaks the fourth wall. His Power lets you Nerf, Errata and Ban cards. This can make their stats 0/1, strip them of all their powers and abilities, or make them pretty much impossible to recruit.
The old Deadpool Main Character let you attack a player to win the game. In this expansion there is an Underworld plot twist that lets you enter the game to fight side-by-side with him. You are represented by the Me token card. It grants the following abilities, Leader and pick any team as your affiliation. The card’s stats are equal to the separate digits of your age. So if you are 35 you’d be a 3/5 character.
Many of the cards in this set follow the normal conventions of the game. But like the ones above, others introduce some funky interactions. For instance Fantomex is a unique 6 drop, 5/5 character with range. He has a Reaction that lets you place three 2 drop tokens, Fantomex, Cluster, and Weapon XIII.
If you are interested in seeing more cards from the Deadpool & Friends expansion, google is your friend.
Deadpool & Friends is fun and looney as you might expect. That is not to say it is all a joke and doesn’t have any good or useful cards. It does. But be prepared to laugh and enjoy some of the zany mechanics introduced.
The art is great and on par with the entire VS 2PCG series. The rules highlight the new elements, and explains all the funky wrinkles this set adds.
So far the new release format is cool. It will be nice to get more content and characters quicker. The story Arcs look like an interesting way to connect the Issues too. I am excited to see what other stories from the comics they will explore and add to the game.
I am still a big fan of the Marvel VS 2PCG and Deadpool. So getting more of two things I like is definitely a thumbs up. I like the way this set create some unique interactions and stays true to the game and the character. Pick this up if you are a fan of either.
