Valdora Extra is an expansion that adds a two player variant and special tiles for it. This expansion also adds new cards that can be used with the regular three to five player game and the two player variant.
This review of Valdora Extra assumes you know the rules and basic game play of the base game. If you have not been introduced to Valdora, here is a good place to start. In this article I am going to talk mostly about the new additions that come in this expansion.
The two player variant changes the game into more of a race game. At the end of each Complete Commission action craftsmen (and possibly workshops or bonus points) are removed from the game.
The special cards have dark or light backs. Three light backed cards and one dark backed card are dealt to each player. Light backed cards grant you special abilities that can be used once per turn (not including the turn in which they are played). Dark backed cards grant you extra points and the end of the game if you meet their requirements.
The last addition in this expansion is a metal suitcase to mark the end of the round. This helps you keep track of the player that goes last in the final round.
Valdora Extra is a must have if you plan to play the game with only two players. Even though the game changes when using the two player variant, it is still fun.
The new cards for the base game are not necessary but add some replay value. Each player will have a hidden way to score and unique special abilities. You might like the difference this makes or you might want everyone to have the same opportunity to score and act the same. I could take or leave the cards. They do make a difference but the game is fun with or without them.
The metal suitcase is cute and a nice to have. If you play Valdora a lot or feel the base game is getting stale you should buy Valdora Extra. And like I said above, if you want to play with two players, you’ll need this expansion.
