Board game reviews, strategy tips & session reports
I decided to update my list of the top 10 two player board games. I have not changed this list since 2012. I stand by all the games in my previous lists but this one contains some more recent games. Also there are many 2 player board games that I have never player. The Honorable Mentions list contains two player board games I have heard good things about or played but didn’t make the list this time. I hope you’ll suggest some more for me to try out in the comments section.
10. Claustrophobia – Tense tense, mid-weight skirmish game in which you must survive as the humans or hunt and kill them as the demons. It has really interesting asymmetrical play and dice mechanics.
9. War of the Ring – Can be long with a learning curve but this war game simulates The Lord of the Rings well and oozes with theme.
8. Summoner Wars – Simple card game with a great blend of resource management, skirmish tactics and luck.
7. Twilight Struggle – An excellent strategy game that is full of tension. I guess it should be since it is about the Cold War.
6. Dungeon Command – Miniatures skirmish game with a nice mix of strategy and luck. Unfortunately it doesn’t seem like there will be new sets produced.
5. X-Wing Miniatures – Easy, innovative movement system is easy to learn and the miniatures look amazing. You’ll have to invest some cash but you get your return in fun.
4. Mage Wars – Despite its learning curve there is a lot to this game that lands it this high on the list. You can really get into building your spell book and get a lot of enjoyment from just the base set. It is well supported and has expansions that open up your options even more.
3. Jaipur – Easy to teach, quick and fun. Great for gamers and non-gamers alike.
2. DreadBall – This fast-paced, futuristic sports simulation board game is a blast. You need to press your luck and play to your team’s strengths to win. And playing a league makes it even better.
1. Morels – Full of meaningful, tense decisions yet still easy to teach and play. This accessible card game of set collection is very fun.
Honorable mentions (I have either heard good things about these games, but have not played them or they just missed my list): 1989: Dawn of Freedom, Battle Line, Battlelore, Battleship Galaxies, Dominion, Dungeon Twister, Earth Reborn, Innovation, Jambo, Lost Cities, Pizza Box Football, Race for the Galaxy, Star Wars: the card game
Leave a comment if there are two player games I am missing out on and should try. Or if you think my list needs some editing, let me know.
I’ve mentioned it to you before, but my friends and I love playing ascension. The box games are affordable and adding in expansions works well. To me it feels more fluid then dominion because you never have value cards that just sit, in your hand, and the vast amount of different cards (especially when playing with multiple expansions) means games feel different. It’s one of the few games I can get my wife to play without grumbling.
The Duke!

I must say I have not tried it with just two. But will need to give it a whirl.
This looks like another one I have to try. Thanks for the suggestion!
Lost Cities and Android:Netrunner are my top two and both are 2 player only. I tried X-Wing Miniatures but was underwhelmed. Race for the Galaxy is great but needs more players to be at its best.
Love the list. Have you played Polis: Fight for the Hegemony it might be right up your alley empire sim with mostly euro mechanics. Surprised you didn’t like Race for the Galaxy, I think 2p advanced rules is the best way to play it.
I have not tried Polis, but I will have to find it now. I like Race for the Galaxy a lot and it is the one game I can always get my wife to play. So I have played and like it with 2 players. I just think it is even better with more players.
Some more excellent 2 player games:
A few acres of Snow
Washington’s War
Hannibal: Rome vs Carthage
