Top Ten Games You Can Play In 60 Minutes – 2012

Daylight Savings TimeLast year I made a list of top ten games in honor of Daylight Savings Time. You can read it here. I liked the idea enough I decided to do it again this year. These are my Top Ten games that play in about an hour. I did not list games that take an hour to play but a lot longer to set-up (see Honorable Mentions below). I only list games I have actually played. If you play with someone with analysis paralysis (AP) then this list might be irrelevant. As always you may agree, disagree or add suggestions in the comments.

Here are the top ten games that play in about an hour:

10. Pastiche – This game is about painting and art. It plays quick and is easy to teach and learn.

9. Rising Kings – there are a few strategies to win but the simple mechanics make this one playable and fun.

8. Eminent Domain – you might feel this deck-builder is over too quickly, but you’ll enjoy it.

7. Puzzle Strike – unique, fun and enjoyable whether you win or lose.

6. Claustrophobia – a fantastic two-player dungeon crawl that doesn’t take forever to play.

5. Nightfall – kill or be killed in this quick moving deck-builder.

4. Summoner Wars – great strategic war game that easy to pick up and play.

3. 7 Wonders – great civilization building card game that moves fast whether you play with three or seven.

2. Race for the Galaxy – there is a learning curve to this game, but once learned it flies and is a lot of fun.

1. Dominion – so easy to teach, learn and play you can be competitive after only a few games.

Honorable Mentions:
The Adventurers, Alien Frontiers, Carnival, Dungeon Run, Infinite City, Jab Realtime Boxing, Jaipur, Sentinels of the Multiverse

I’m not really sure who you play Alien Frontiers with if you’re claiming it can be played in an hour. Otherwise, I think I might’ve moved Jaipur up a bit higher (on the list). A lot of the others are really good, though.

I agree with four Alien Frontiers takes a bit longer with more. That is the biggest reason it is in the Honorable Mentions and not in the list. Glad you like the list.

  3. Sam says:

Let me recommend Fealty from Asmadi Games. Great game, plays quick.

  4. jason@play-board-games.com says:

I have heard pretty good things about Fealty and will have to give it a try. Thanks!

  5. Tomas says:

And where is Pandemic on this list?

  6. jason@play-board-games.com says:

It was on last year’s list (#4). It is still very good and fun. It just doesn’t hit my table as often as it used to. Maybe it will be back next year.
