Board game reviews, strategy tips & session reports
This is an updated list of my top ten 2 player board games, I only list games I have played. I am sure there are many more that I haven’t played, but if you are looking for a good 2 player board game you can’t go wrong with anything on this list.
10. Battlelore – takes a while to setup, has a good bit of luck and fun to play.
9. Race for the Galaxy – This game is for more than just 2 players but is still a lot of fun as a two player game.
8. Dungeon Twister – mostly strategy, may get repetitive after a lot of plays (but they have expansions)
7. Magestorm – A fun war game with some nice innovative mechanics.
6. Claustrophobia – great survival game and both sides have such different gameplay.
5. War of the Ring – very complex simulation of The Lord of the Rings, can be long but worth the time
4. Jambo – has lots of options on strategies with a bit of a learning curve, fun for all
3. Lost Cities – fairly straight-forward, easy to learn and fun to play
2. Battle Line – deeper than some other card games with a variety of strategies
1. Jaipur – quick, fun and easy to teach not much to complain about here
Honorable mentions (I have either heard good things about these but have not played them or they just missed the list):
Dominion, Earth Reborn, Guardians of Graxia, Ninja vs Ninja, Stratego, Heroclix, Memoir ’44, Pizza Box Football
Comment with other games I am missing out on and should try or if you think I have listed undeserving games here, let me know.
Great list. Mine is quite a bit different, but I haven’t played some of the games you listed (including Jaipur, shame on me).

I have never played Lords of Vegas (but want to) and I just traded for Innovation. San Juan is like Race for the Galaxy and my wife will always play Race for the Galaxy so I am trading away San Juan.
You should give Jaipur a try it. You’ll like it.
Some 2-player games I enjoy:
Through the Desert
Beowulf: The Movie
Omen: A Reign of War
Lord of the Rings: The Confrontation
At the Gates of Loyang (also makes a great solo game)
Thanks for the feedback. I have played Lord of the Rings: The Confrontation, but none of the others. I’ll have try them sometime.
Hey Jason, which company puts out #5 War of the Ring? Middle Earth addict that I am, I need something I can whup my daughter’s butt at that doesn’t involve the Nintendo DS…
@Nate – It is being reprinted this fall by Ares Games. It is fairly complex and long but it is a lot of fun. It really catches the spirit and theme of the books.
