Board game reviews, strategy tips & session reports
First let me give you my definition of family board games. A family board game is easy to learn, fairly quick to play and accessible to a variety of ages, around 8+.
10. Scattergories – easy and good for vocabulary. It is also fun to see who thinks like you.
9. Liar’s Dice/Perudo – some light strategy and luck , but you may get bumped out of this game and be forced to watch
8. Apples to Apples – this game is more fun when you know the people you are playing with. I hope you know your family 🙂
7. Settlers of Catan – might be a little too much for younger kids, but has a nice mix of luck and strategy
6. Wits and Wagers – fun for all ages you can even just guess numbers and don’t need to know exact answers to play and win
5. Quicksand – I have played this with a 6 year old. Simple, fun, quick and easy
4. Say Anything – like Apples to Apples this game is better if you know the people you are playing with well.
3. Dominion – Again this might be a bit harder for young kids but once they learn it they’ll love it. Plays in about a half-hour!
2. Zooloretto – Good game for kids with enough strategy for parents to enjoy too
1. Ticket to Ride – for many of the same reasons I chose it as my #1 gateway game – contains a nice mix of old and new mechanics to give new players a comfortable yet unique experience
Honorable Mentions:
Taboo, Catchphrase, Guesstures, Dominoes, Scrabble
Agree? Disagree? That is what the comments are for!
My in-laws swiped my Apple Crate; may have to pick up a new one one of these days. My wife gave me the t-shirt game, which is similar to Apples to Apples, but it’s not as good.
