My RISK Legacy Experience:

First I want to warn you there are some spoilers in this post. If you want to read my review of RISK Legacy, there are no spoilers in it. This post is after nine games and talks about the experience up to this point.

Our early games of RISK Legacy were similar to normal RISK. Someone would set up shop in Australia and work that continent bonus into enough of an advantage that they would take two other headquarters. This would give them the four they needed to win. One major difference was the amount of time it took to play a game. The first game was over in 15-20 minutes and the second wasn’t too much longer.

We opened the pack for signing the board a second time on the third game. This pack added some events and missions. Homelands were introduced and almost every faction had one. The Enclave of the Bear had won the first three games and started in Indonesia the first five games.

Things changed a bit after game three when all the minor cities were placed. A bio-hazard was placed in Indonesia and the continent bonus in Australia was reduced by one. Argentina also had a bio-hazard scar, the drafting cards and more events entered play.

Game six saw one player eliminated and we busted open the pack with elimination powers. Since then only one other faction has gained one.

One night only three players could make it so we tried two three player games. They were ok but this game really shines with four or five players.

In game eight three missiles went off on a roll in a battle between North Africa and Brazil. Out came the Mutants and North Africa has a fallout scar. I was really surprised to see a new faction enter the game. I thought it would be more troops or something along those lines.

I used the Mutants in game nine and won quickly. Their events seemed to trigger and gave me two red stars since no one else was able to hold (or choose not to hold) a continent. I am interested to see just how powerful the Mutants faction will be. And now I am thinking the other big pack might even be another faction…we’ll see.

As I said in my review of RISK Legacy, I am enjoying the game. It has been interesting to see how players interact with the board. Some players that like to start in a certain place won’t scar it since they plan to place there again (especially if they have named the continent). Also some continents have a scar on every country. This helps those with a Major City there.

Some in our group have been frustrated that luck can still rule the day, but we are all enjoying watching the world evolve. It truly is unique and innovative. I am eagerly waiting for other game to incorporate these unlock and evolve mechanics.
