The Palace Expansion for Revolution makes room for two more players and adds new roles to bid on. Is this more for more’s sake or does the expansion make the game better?
This review assumes you know how to play the base game. If you don’t, go here and read my review of Revolution. Then come back and see what new elements are added in The Palace Expansion.
One thing this expansion adds is more players. Components are added so that two more people can join the game.
This might seem like it would unbalance the game, but don’t worry, there are new bidding boards with more spaces to bid on and even one more building in which to place influence.
The new bid boards have four more spaces, the Viceroy, Messenger, Mayor and Constable. The Viceroy allows you to place one influence in the Palace. The Palace scores for 55 pts and allows you to place a cube in the Guardhouse. While you occupy the Guardhouse your cubes may only be moved or removed by you.
The Messenger lets you reassign up to two of your cubes already on the board and gain three support. The Mayor lets you place an influence on any open space. The Constable gets you one blackmail and five support.
The Palace Expansion for Revolution adds some new elements without drastically changing the rules or the game play. This makes its learning curve practically non-existent.
The new elements while not game-changing, do offer some new strategies. The Viceroy in particular can help you keep your cubes where you like them. The Palace itself adds a large influence area worth a lot of points at the end of the game.
The additional players require you to pay attention to more things. You will have to figure out what players are bidding on and react accordingly. Some people you can bid little on early and win become more expensive during the mid and end game. Being able to get the most influence and support for the least amount of your resources is more challenging with six people. And it is a good and fun challenge.
If you own Revolution I highly recommend The Palace Expansion. It will not be an earth shattering experience. But getting to play with more people and adding the additional area and bidding spaces makes this expansion worth the investment.
