Board game reviews, strategy tips & session reports
Patchwork is a tile-laying and resource management game with a quilting theme. The digital port does a good job of representing the physical game.
In Patchwork you must sew a quilt on your 9×9 board. You have a selection of three tiles you may purchase and then add to your board. Tiles cost buttons (which are also VPs) and time. The longer the patch of cloth you purchase takes to add to your quilt the more turns your opponent gets until you may choose another tile.
Some of the patches you can add have buttons on them. The game end is tracked on a central board that denotes when you gain more buttons to spend. Once you cross one of these spaces on the board you gain buttons equal to the number of buttons you have in your quilt. If you are unable to buy any of the three tiles you may pass. If you must pass you move to the space in front of your opponent and gain a button for each space you moved.
A few spaces on the board are marked with a single 1×1 patch tile. The first player to cross this space takes the tile and adds it to their quilt.
The final space on the board provides one last payout from the buttons on your quilt. Your final score equals the number of buttons you have minus two VPs for each empty space in your quilt. You also get a bonus 7 VPs if you are the first player to fill a 7×7 square with no holes on your quilt. You win if you have the most VPs.
Patchwork is another board game app that I haven’t played in physical form. But it is enough digitally that it must be fun in analog.
The tutorial does a great job explaining how the game plays and where to access information in the interface.
I really enjoy the two currencies of the game buttons and time and how they interact. Adding in the size of patch tiles and wanting to fill your quilt makes this simple game have more depth than it seems.
You will enjoy this game but be aware the AI is not too challenging. I remain undefeated even against the hard AI opponent. But playing with friends continues to be a fun challenge.
If you enjoy this game in its physical form or are looking for a great two player game, pick the Patchwork App up. You can play across different systems including iOS, Android or as a Windows App.
Be glad you only played now and not when it came out… It was just one big lagging bug. But now it runs smoothly and i’m no longer sad for getting it.
One thing I just don’t get, why can’t they support more than one profile. If you play with a friend or family or spouse, someone has to bee just “Guest” and their information is not tracked. It’s a comfort thing, really, but such a little fix.
Yeah I know there were some issues early on, but things have really been cleaned up. I mostly play online or solo but your point about having more than one profile makes sense. Who knows maybe this will be addressed!
