Nightfall Martial Law is a stand-alone expansion to a great deck-building game. You can add these cards to the base game or just enjoy them by themselves. Will they add more enjoyment to your Nightfall experience?
I’m mostly going to talk about the new things that Martial Law brings to the Nightfall table. If you are unfamiliar with Nightfall, you can read my review here.
First and foremost Martial Law brings more cards, twelve new minions and twelve new actions. These new cards add variety and new combinations to play.
As far as new mechanics are concerned there are two. Some cards give you the ability to Feed. Feeding allows you to repeat an action or kicker once for a price (usually discarding one card).
The other new thing is some of the wounds in Martial Law allow you to discard them during combat to increase your target minion’s strength by one. This is also a Feed action allowing you to discard more wounds (adding one strength for each wound discarded).
I know it doesn’t seem like a lot is written above and although part of me would have loved to see a couple new mechanics, Martial Law adds a good bit to the original game.
The new cards alone add more tactics and combinations. Some minions hang around longer than one combat phase. More cards allow you to exile cards too.
Feeding is a nice addition but you must determine when to Feed wisely. This is even more important in games with more players.
The components and art are done well and fit the theme. Again I have to make sure my young kids don’t find this lest they have nightmares.
In short if you enjoy Nightfall you are sure enjoy Martial Law. You may have even played enough Nightfall that you are looking for more variety. If so you will be happy to own Martial Law.
