Age of Ultron is the latest expansion for Marvel Dice Masters. It has a bunch of Avengers and introduces the Guardians of the Galaxy and other new characters.
The Age of Ultron expansion introduces two new keywords. That makes it easy for longtime players to introduce new dice to their teams. If you have never played a Dice Masters game read my review of the DC Comics Dice Masters game. It contains an overview of the game and rules. The rest of this post is going to assume you are familiar with the basics.
The new keywords are Teamwatch and Teamwork. Teamwatch abilities happen when a character with Teamwatch is active, and you field another character that has the same affiliation as them. Teamwork abilities reward you for having characters that share an affiliation.
In addition to these new keywords, there are many new characters introduced in The Age of Ultron Set. Daredevil, Kang, the Guardians of the Galaxy and some Agents of Shield all show up. There is even a Shield faction.
The starter comes with Captain America, Iron Man, Black Widow, Hulk, Thor, Hawkeye, Ultron and Vision.
Let me start by admitting I am a Marvel guy. I enjoyed the DC Comics Dice Masters game, but definitely felt more immersed playing with Marvel characters. A lot of cool Marvel characters are in this expansion.
The components for this game are nice. The art looks good and the dice are well-made and easy to read. The rules are easy to read but are a little disorganized.
The new Teamwork and Teamwatch keywords are interesting and with the number of Avengers in this set you’ll definitely get the chance to use them. Not adding a ton of new mechanics makes it easy to integrate this set into your current collection. And these new keyword are pretty universal.
If you want to try a game of Dice Masters series you can pick Marvel or DC. I really enjoyed playing the Age of Ultron Starter Set with a handful of booster packs. And I am sure that has to do with my preference and knowledge of the Marvel universe. If the game sounds interesting to you, pick your universe, buy starter set and have fun!
