Board game reviews, strategy tips & session reports
The Mage Wars Companion App helps you track the current game state as you play the game and build spell books based on the cards you own.
I know what assuming can do. But I assume if you are reading this post you own or at least know about Mage Wars. In case my assumption is wrong you can learn more about the game here.
The Mage Wars Companion App does two things. First it helps keep track of the information currently tracked on your player board including initiative. Secondly it helps you build spell books for your mages.
The tracker (as it is called) lets you choose the mages in the match and randomly sets the initiative for the first round. You click pluses and minuses to add and subtract damage, total health, mana and channel value. When you are ready for a new round it transfers the initiative and adds the mages’ channel value to their mana. If you accidentally close the app you do not lose your game state. Simply reload the app, go back into the tracker and the game continues from where you left off. Once one mage’s damage equals their total health the app declares the victor.
The builder lets you build spell books for your mages. You can name the book and select the mage the book is for. The app will adjust the spell costs based on that mages trained schools. You can click to add and remove cards and zoom in to read them. If you know the card or an ability you are looking for you can use the search function. You can also narrow the selection down by card sets or a school of magic.
The Mage Wars Companion App is nice addition for owners of the game. It is helpful, easy to navigate and available for Apple and Android tablets.
The tracker is nice for the bookkeeping in-game. We all know chits can move and the app removes that possibility. You’ll know exactly how much mana and health you and your opponent have at all times.
As much as I like the tracker the builder might be even more useful. There are several expansions for Mage Wars and a ton of cards. As awesome as this is it can be a bit overwhelming when building spell books. The app really helps to focus your options to cards you own and your mage can use. And the search function helps you find your favorite spells easily.
Though the app is pretty intuitive it could use some in-app instructions. There is a tutorial video here that answers most any question you might have, but having these insights in the tool would be better. It would also be nice to duplicate a spell book so you could easily try variations without losing your original idea or build the variation from scratch.
If you own Mage Wars and a tablet this app is worth getting. Especially if you like to try different mages and spell books. It just makes the entire process more efficient. The tracker is useful too and kind of like icing on the cake.
