Board game reviews, strategy tips & session reports
The Unleashed Adventure Kit is a starter set with everything you need to begin adventuring in the wilds of the Iron Kingdom.
Description of the Unleashed Adventure Kit:
The Unleashed RPG is set in the Iron Kingdoms, but instead of playing fantasy races, you play monsters. The system is very similar to the Iron Kingdoms RPG and is compatible with it too.
The Iron Kingdoms Unleashed Adventure Kit comes with an abridged rulebook containing all the basics of the system, including character advancement, new abilities and some equipment. There is a section about how to advance the pre-generated characters after they finish the included scenario. The back of the book has some tips for new game masters too.
The four pre-generated characters are interesting and their booklets have lots of information for playing the characters. It includes character stats, background and their attitude toward the other PCs. The back provides details on each character’s archetype and their special abilities.
Miniatures are provided for use in the provided scenario. They represent the PCs and their foes. There are nine large terrain tiles and several smaller double-sided terrain tiles.
The included scenario is full of fluff and sets the stage for this adventure in western Immoren. It gives you hooks for each pre-generated character and helps game masters that are new to the system with GM notes. For those more familiar with the system there are sections you can use at your discretion. Each encounter shows you a detailed setup plus what miniatures and terrain to use and where to place everything. They highlight enemy tactics and other encounter features you need to be aware of.
A Quick Review of the Iron Kingdoms Unleashed Adventure Kit:
The Unleashed Adventure Kit is a great introduction to the Iron Kingdoms and specifically the Unleashed setting. Everything is explained and laid out very well.
The included scenario is fun, challenging and well-written. The brutal nature of the world really shines through. You can use parts of your fallen foes to enhance your weapons or just eat them.
The character booklets look great. And the details about the group’s dynamics are excellent and can really help your players get into character.
The miniatures and terrain tiles are very useful and you can use them for future adventures. They might be the best part of the entire kit.
I didn’t mention the underwhelming ruler that is included but hopefully you have a better ruler you can use. But like I said the rest of the components are really nice and more than make up for it.
If you are interested in Unleashed, the Adventure Kit makes a great introduction to the system.
