Board game reviews, strategy tips & session reports
Are you looking for some ideas of what to buy the board gamer in your life? Then look no further. The gift ideas in my guides from 2012, 2011 and 2010 are still good ones and this list just adds to those.
For Ages 3-6
Pengoloo – This memory game is great for young kids and fun for adults too.
Spot It! – There are five different ways to play this game. It is super portable and can even be played non-competitively for really young children.
Indigo – This tile-laying game is easy to play and fun for the entire family. Even little ones can win it.
For Ages 7-12
Dungeon Roll – Dungeon delving, dice-rolling and press-your-luck mechanics, what more could you ask for? This makes a good filler for adults and kids really enjoy it.
Las Vegas – Not a ton of strategy in this game but there is a lot of fun in it.
Legendary– This semi-cooperative deck building game has super heroes and lots of replay value. The expansions only add to the replay and experience.
For Ages 12+
Guildhall – This set collection game has a good bit of “take that” in it. But it’s all in the name of fun (and winning).
Love Letter – A mini-card game that is quick, super portable and fun.
Goa – This unique auction game has good depth and replay value.
For 2 players
Dreadball – Great miniatures sports board game with non-stop action. Loads of fun!
Morels – This game is really good for couples. You must collect sets of mushrooms and cook them to score VPs.
Party Game
Maximum Throwdown – A dexterity, card-throwing game that can be a blast with the right group of people. Just be sure to have a decent-sized table.
Toc Toc Woodman/Click-Clack Lumberjack – Tap a tree to knock off the bark. But don’t hit it too hard or you’ll take out the core and lose points. This is a fun party game for all ages.
Solo Game
Pathfinder Adventure Card Game – This is a cooperative game that plays really well solo. If you like developing characters and seeing what new loot you collect, this game is for you.
Hornet Leader: Carrier Air Operations – You build a squadron of fighter planes and fly missions. You must eliminate targets and survive to score points.
