In Field Commander Rommel you must lead the Axis troops against the Allied forces. Can you wage war more efficiently than the real general?
Field Commander Rommel is a solitaire war game that comes with three scenarios. Each scenario has different goals that include: attack and control separate regions, gain control of a specific area, or hold an area for as long as you can.
Each round you will move, battle and resupply the Axis forces. Each scenario uses a different map which specifies your starting units, reinforcement units and how you gain more supplies.
After you have taken your actions you act for the Allied forces. The map will give you specs for how the Allied forces move and if they are able to reinforce their armies. Each round you also randomly draw to enact the Allied forces’ operations. Operations add forces, advance troops and launch more attacks.
Battles are pretty straightforward. You determine the Allied forces Battle Plans then choose your own Battle Plans. Battle Plans can grant more attacks, adjust supplies, improve your units’ stats and even remove Battle Plans. For each unit you destroy you can upgrade one of your surviving units to a veteran or elite unit. Upgraded units get a bump in their stats.
Once you have reached the scenario goals or turn limit the game is over. Depending on the round you are on you score VPs. You can even start with disadvantages that will increase the amount you score.
Field Commander Rommel is a fun solo war game with good mechanics and an opponent that is easy to manage.
The components and rules for Field Commander Rommel are well-made and look good. The rules are easy to follow and have many helpful examples. You can be playing this game shortly after reading the rules.
I have played a few solo games versus an automated opponent and must say Field Commander Rommel has a very good system. You will not spend a lot of time just trying to figure out your opponent’s moves.
Field Commander Rommel plays at a quick pace. Games may take up to 2 hours or so but they do not drag or seem to take that long. If you are looking for a solo war game this could be the one for you.
