The Dungeons and Dragons Rules Expansion Gift Set contains three books; Mordenkein’s Monsters of the Multiverse, Tasha’s Cauldron of Everything, Xanathar’s Guide to Everything, and a DM screen.
This gift set contains two previously released books, Tasha’s Cauldron of Everything and Xanathar’s Guide to Everything. But they have been changed to include errata and updates made since their original releases in 2020 and 2017, respectively.
Mordenkein’s Monsters of the Multiverse is a new book that releases this May. It weighs in at 288 pages and contains 30+ updated player races and, as the title suggests, more monsters. In fact there are over 250 new monsters. Most of these player races and monsters come from previously printed supplements and adventures, but some are new. Some of the entries, both player races and monsters, have been tweaked and updated from those initially released.
The new player races decouple ability score increases from the race. This means you can play a Tabaxi with +2 Strength and +1 Constitution instead of the previously released version that gave +2 Dexterity and +1 Charisma. Some of the player races even allow you to choose your size.
The DM screen is similar to others that have been released. It has some useful charts so you have the information you need at the ready.
The Dungeons and Dragons Rules Expansion Gift Set is a great resource with a wealth of information. Getting updated versions of Tasha’s Cauldron of Everything and Xanathar’s Guide to Everything is great, but the real gem in this gift set is Mordenkein’s Monsters of the Multiverse.
The new playable races are great and add a ton of options to choose from. The new way stat increases have changed means you can play whatever race you want for any class you want. This really frees players up to create the adventurer they want to make.
Should you buy the Dungeons and Dragons Rules Expansion Gift Set? Well that depends. Do you have Tasha’s Cauldron of Everything and Xanathar’s Guide to Everything? You might want to wait.Having all the monsters and playable characters from supplements and adventures in one place is nice. But if you own the majority of those too it might be better until Mordenkein’s Monsters of the Multiverse is released later this year. But if you own none of the tomes in this gift set it makes sense to pick it up. They are all useful and definitely books you’ll want to own after getting the core books.
