Although the party gleaned little info from their negotiation with Tormund, they head out toward the Canyon of Guthay. Their travel to the canyon is uneventful, but the canyon walls are riddled with caverns. Finding the vault will take some time and luck.
After examining the canyon wall the adventurers enter one of the darkened caverns. Upon entering they see four small insects. Believing this not what they should be looking for the party tries an older looking cavern.
Inside there are bodies strewn about the floor. Most are old and decrepit, but some gith corpses are still rather fresh. Suddenly most of the older corpses begin to animate.
One zombie teleports into the entrance and suddenly Meldrick and Otiril are surrounded by darkness. The other members of the party cannot see passed the darkness either.
Meldrick charges ahead to where he last saw the zombie. As he runs through the darkness he is bit. He manages to keep his balance and continues charging through the darkness. He quickly emerges from the dark and hits a skeleton standing there. It clatters to the ground and shatters.
Clay runs through the darkness and hits one of the zombies slowly shambling toward the party. The zombie retaliates and punches Clay hard. Two more zombies close and swing at Clay, only one connects.
Aram summons his elemental but it fails to connect with the zombie lurking in the darkness. Arannis takes a literal shot in the dark and manages to nail the teleporting zombie. He pushes it out of the dark.
Otiril not seeing the zombie’s new position, charges but misses. The skeletons have bows and many launch them at the party. Most miss their intended target, but Meldrick is hit.
The zombie teleports again, is immersed in darkness and bites Otiril. Meldrick continues to drop skeletons as Clay pounds on the zombies that surround him.
Aram skirts through the darkness and is bit. Once on the other side he summons his elemental and it pounds on a skeleton.
Otiril swings and hits the zombie before it can teleport again. Meldrick flanks the teleporting zombie as it thrashes at Otiril. Clay still being pursued by the other zombies gets into position and strikes the teleporting zombie too. It falls to the ground.
The party then makes quick work of the remaining skeletons and zombies. After a short rest they head toward a tunnel on the other side of the cavern.
DM Notes:
I actually feel like I ran the initial skill challenge well. The PCs didn’t even know they were in one. The fight was fun and it was a good night for all.
