The party is in Tyr and hired by Kaldras and elven peddler to escort him to Altaruk. The journey will pit the party against the elements and possibly raiders and creatures of the desert.
The first two days of the journey are tough as most journeys in Athas are. But between their conditioning, observant navigation and resourceful foraging the party leads the caravan to the western lip of the sandy wastes. The caravan stops for the night on the edge of the dunes with Altaruk just a few more days away.
The scorching sun continues to assault the party but they press on. They leave the rocky barrens for the sandy dunes. Sand pelts the caravan as the wind gusts and swirls around them. Although tired from their trek through the wastelands the party presses on. The longer the trip goes the more irritable the kanks become, but the party is able to convince them to continue the trip. Ittik builds a makeshift shelter to keep the frigid night at bay.
Finally the caravan reaches the rocky badlands, a maze of craggy rocks. As they walk suddenly they hear the sound of footsteps headed toward them. Kaldras and his family huddle between the kanks as about ten figures surround the caravan.
A group of human raiders and slaves have been following the caravan and have set up an ambush. Two raiders move to attack one goes after the monk while the other attacks the bard. Slaves come from the fore and rear positioning to strike and attack Kitano.
Another raider jumps down from a ridge and heads for the goods on the kanks. Otiril rushes to protect the elves and their goods, hacking at the raider with his large axe. Arannis hits a bandit and slides him passed Kitano who swings at him but misses. Kitano steps back and mind locks the raider and a nearby slave leaving them immobile. Shortly after that Arannis slides the raider by Kitano and this time Kitano drops him.
The monk attacks both a raider and a slave, ravaging the one and killing the other. The raider counters and stabs the thri-kreen with a dagger. The bard heals Ittik as he continues his assault on the scavengers.
Meanwhile after a couple misses Otiril nails the raider by the kanks. Kitano positions and heals as Arannis drops a slave. Otiril hits the bandit again and feeling better the psion offs a raider.
The thri-kreen is engaged with two slaves and one hits him. He strikes back and the slave falls. Battered, he tries to get out of the fray, but is hit and falls. Oritil retaliates and drops the final slave. The lone raider is then struck down by the bard.
The party stabilizes Ittik and checks on the elves. With everyone ok or on the mend the adventure continues…
DM Notes:
With only 4 PCs instead of 5 I scaled the ambush down. It was still tough, but the PCs still prevailed. Also there was no map and I should have made the area for the fight bigger.
