Choose Your Own Adventure is a cooperative board game that is true to its source. You decide which path to choose and hope to find items and information to help you win.
Choose Your Own Adventure Board Game is almost exactly like reading one of these classic books. The game is divided into chapters and as you read each page you have a choice (or two) to make.
In House of Danger, you are a psychic detective and must figure out what is going on in this creepy estate. You have had visions of it in your dreams and begin the adventure after receiving a weird phone call from the property.
You begin the game by looking at the book cover for two minutes. It might contain clues that will be useful later in your adventure. Then pick a player to read the first page of your current chapter. The group should discuss and agree on the choice at the bottom of the page but the current reader makes the final decision.
Some pages have challenges on them. These must be faced unless they are marked as optional. In order to successfully pass a challenge you must roll a d6 and meet or beat the current danger level. The danger level starts at three but can increase depending on events in the book. If you ever reach the top of the danger level you reset the track and lose two psychic points.
Psychic points represent your psychic abilities and the higher they are the better. Often you need a certain score to detect something and gain additional information or items.
Items may be used to gain modifiers to specific types of challenges. Most items are not one use, but if you roll a 1 you lose any item used in a challenge.
You play through the game in chapters and each one takes 45 to 60 minutes. Before proceeding to the next chapter, you can loop back to explore more of the current chapter. But you might face more danger.
Choose Your Own Adventure is a fun cooperative board game that will appeal to fans of the old books. I read these classic books and this game was full of nostalgia for me. Playing with me kids has been especially fun as everyone gets a chance to read and we make decisions as a group.
The components for this game are really nice. Like I said, everything mirrors the style of the original series and looks great. The rules are straightforward and easy to understand. You can get this to the table minutes after opening it up.
This board game is great for families and kids. Nothing is too harsh. You don’t die. Everyone works together and gets a chance to read and participate. But if you are a solo gamer you can play it alone.
Some outcomes are totally dependent on a roll. If you are looking for a strategic cooperative board game for your group, this is not it. But if you want a fun engaging board game to play with your kids, pick up the Choose Your Own Adventure board game.
