Inns and Cathedrals is an expansion for Carcassonne that adds some press your luck and more shenanigans to the digital app.
The Inns and Cathedrals expansion adds three major new elements to the game. Obviously it adds Inns and Cathedrals. It also gives each player two large meeples.
Large meeples are placed just like the small ones. The difference is they count for two when claiming finished areas. So if you have a large meeple in a completed city and your opponent has a small one you get all the points and they get nothing.
Inns are located on and placed like other road tiles. However if you score a completed road with an inn you get two points per tile instead of one. But if at the end of the game you have not completed a road with an inn tile on it you get no points.
The cathedral tiles work similarly to the inns but for cities. They make completed city tiles and their crests worth three points instead of two. But they too come with some risk. If you don’t complete a city with a cathedral tile in it, it is worth zero points at games end.
The Inns and Cathedrals expansion adds some fun new elements to Carcassonne. It lets you use the new tiles to press your luck for more points or mess your opponent up. And the large meeples are useful when trying to protect or steal a region.
The expansion has a great tutorial and you’ll learn how to play within minutes. The new elements add more ways to mess with your opponents especially near the end of the game. If your opponent can’t finish a long road and the game is almost over, slap an inn tile on their road and now it is worth nothing.
The large meeples makes jockeying for territory more interesting since you can try to overwhelm an opponent or make them keep pace.
If you enjoy Carcassonne Tiles & Tactics and want to mix up the game play, you should get the Inns & Cathedrals expansion. It is available on Android and Steam.
