Dungeons and Dragons – Heathen – Session 5

Tiefling BattleThe leader of the village returns, thanks the party for their help, and begins to get her people ready to move. They decide they will take refuge in Adakmi now that they homes are burned and lives have been destroyed.

Upon returning to the boat, Tredok tells the party he thought he saw something moving on the when they left for the village. Auidar and Tony look around for tracks, but find nothing. The party heads upstream and after another days journey find a nice place to camp. Tedok suggests setting up a watch just in case trouble comes looking for the adventurers.

During the third watch while Orsik and Auidar are on watch trouble comes. Its form is not known at first as all the two heroes see is a blur of motion. Two blades glistens in the night sky one missing Orsik, the other sinking into Auidar. Instantly his blood begins to boil under his skin…poison. Unfortunately no attacker can be seen and Auidar decides to shake Render and yell for everyone to get up. Not knowing where the assailant is the party merely spreads out a bit and tries to keep their backs against something. Tony climbs a rock waiting to see something to snipe at.

Out of nowhere a teifling appears he quickly stabs at Orsik and Donaar missing them both. Again just as quickly as he appeared he disappears. Tony fires at the location he saw the tiefling in but his arrows rattle to the ground. Auidar continues to try to fight off the effects of the poison to no avail and takes a moment to heal himself.

Seeing how this fight seems to be taking place the party readies their actions for the moment the teifling reappears before them. The telfling appears again this time attacking Donaar and Orsik from behind. Orsik retaliates but misses. Render charges in with his great axe swinging but the teifling is able to avoid the blow. Staying visible the teifling is hit by Donaar and Tony. The party flanks the attacker who doesn’t seem to care. In fact the more he is hurt the harder he seems to fight, slashing at his attackers with increased ferocity. He manages to connect and poison Render and Donaar just as Auidar’s body finally overcomes the poison in his veins.

Now that the cat and mouse games seem to be over the party begins to whittle the tielfing down. Even as he exchanges blow for blow the heroes outnumber and slay him. They collect some money and a healing potion from his corpse and Render takes the tip of his tail as a souvenir. The party finishes their rest and the next day continue up the river.

Finally the heroes come upon the Pillars of Night. It looks like a large community that is fairly open and unguarded. Donning the cloaks they had taken from their past foes the party infiltrates the grounds. They see gaining access to the main temple will be hard as it is well-guarded. So they gather some information by working with other cultists and gleaning information from them. It seems that Jaryn is now the voice of Narrash and that he has organized the cult into a militarized community. After a few days Word of the labors and piety of these “new recruits” reaches ranking members of the cult. The heroes are to be taken to the inner temple at sun¬down that night to partake of a ceremony called the Rite of the Eye.

DM Notes:
Running this fight was only second to the doppelganger fight. The action is fast and the foe is tough. A couple PCs were in danger so it was kinda intense. That being said the moving and staying invisible was a bit tough to understand and implement at first. The skill challenge was ok, but it could have been run smoother. But that is just me not being too familiar with how to run Skill Challenges at all. Any other DMs have tips for running these? How much info do you give the party etc…
